Eidogen's Challenge

How does a leading developer of drug discovery informatics systems ensure that its customers have continuous access to its services and that its software developers can meet development schedules without impacting production systems?

Solution

Integrien Alive™ intelligently automates the monitoring, management and repair of the software, data, server and network subsystems that determine availability and performance of enterprise Eidogen's drug discovery platform to ensure that Eidogen's customers have non-stop access to these critical subscribed enterprise applications.

Eidogen is a leading provider of computational drug discovery platforms. The company's Target Informatics Platform(TM) (TIP™) is the world's first structural and comparative proteomics enterprise software solution. TIP™ allows drug discovery researchers and organizations to attack their "druggability," selectivity, toxicity, and reduced market-exclusivity problems by supporting new and truly collaborative research in target prioritization, lead discovery, and lead optimization.

Eidogen's platform is used by scientists worldwide to facilitate drug discovery research. Organizations pay top-dollar to give their researchers access to the software and the scientific intellectual property in Eidogen's databases. It's critical to Eidogen customers that researchers have access to TIP anytime, anywhere. The production platform runs on a complex infrastructure consisting of over 25 servers running Red Hat Linux, Enhydra application servers and Versant databases.

Critical medical research is Always On

Keeping the TIP platform available and performing optimally is critical to Eidogen and the job of David Nye, Manager of Systems Engineering. "Making sure that bandwidth utilization is within normal ranges and that the production platform is available is critically important to Eidogen and its customers," says Nye. "Alive allows me to ensure that TIP is always available and performing optimally."

"I looked at a lot of different solutions and most require weeks or months to install and configure just to get simple monitoring metrics," says Nye. Ultimately, Nye chose Alive over the others. "Alive is easy to install and use," says Nye. "I was able to go from installing to fully monitoring the health and operation of our system in about a day."

Insight to forecast requirements and plan resources

In addition to monitoring the performance and availability of TIP, Eidogen uses Alive to forecast its bandwidth, infrastructure and resource requirements. "As demand for TIP grows, I need to keep pace and ensure the production platform has the available bandwidth and computing resources to meet my target service levels," says Nye. "Alive provides me detailed statistics and reports so that I can scale my resources to meet the demand proactively."

Alive improves developer productivity and software quality

Alive is also used by Eidogen's software developers to monitor its development infrastructure. "When our development platform and infrastructure isn't available or performing optimally it wastes the valuable time of software developers and impacts our development schedules," says Nye. "Alive allows us to maintain optimal health of the development platform." Because it's easy to install, configure, and use, developers can use Alive to monitor the development platform themselves without training or previous experience.

Additionally, Eidogen developers use Alive to improve software quality. "Our developers often find it difficult to diagnose software problems during the development cycle," says Nye. "Our developers regularly use Alive to analyze and troubleshoot software before deploying to the production platform."

No-impact architecture won't degrade system performance

Alive is a complete, standalone software package and doesn't require that agent software be deployed on monitored servers. While Nye had experience with other monitoring solutions, Alive's agentless approach was essential to Eidogen's needs. Many agent-based solutions consume significant resources on monitored devices, reducing performance and sharply adding to their overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). "Alive's agentless architecture has virtually no impact on our systems and their performance," says Nye, "which simplifies upgrades and expansion of our platforms."

Alive has proven to be the ideal tool for maintaining the operational integrity of Eidogen's infrastructure. "Alive is an elegant, affordable and comprehensive solution," says Nye, "It allows me to aggregate all my servers and network subsystems into a single dashboard view. Alive alerts us to problems and failures, automates healing and offers predictive reporting. It enables us to deliver the highest quality of service to our customers and helps our developers to deliver high-quality software and meet their project schedules."

Benefits

  • Comprehensive dashboard view allows proactive monitoring of servers, applications and network performance and loads.
  • Keeps production platform available and performing optimally for customers 24/7.
  • Minimizes downtime for software developers and enables diagnoses of software problems before deploying to the production platform.
  • Improved software release quality due to development-cycle vulnerability testing with Alive.
  • Granular monitoring, graduated alerts and automated countermeasures facilitate rapid resolution of problems and dramatically minimizes downtime.
